Sunday Night Freeze Tag!
May 14th, 2007 by MegaBuddy
Looking for something fun that your entire kinship can do together? Well how about a good old fashioned game of tag? Yes, that’s right, tag! You know, the game you played when you were much younger where one person is “it” and they have to run around trying to catch everyone else and tag them?
In The Lord of the Rings Online, you have the ability to play tag with other players. In fact, there are two types of games to choose from. There’s plain old regular tag and then there’s freeze tag! Now I’m sure there’s a few of you who are wondering what in the name of Sauron is this freeze tag. Simply put, freeze tag is similar to tag, but when a person is tagged they are frozen in place (sort of like a ‘root’ but with ice).
So how do you tell which person is “it”? When a game of tag is started, one person is randomly chosen to be “it”. That player will have a purplish colored arrow overhead, clearly indicating they are “it”. As a suggestion, you may want to turn off floating names (using the “N” key) to better see the arrow.

To add a twist to the game and make it challenging, other players are able to “thaw” (freeing) other players by standing next to them for a few seconds. Once thawed, they’re free to run around again.

Once everyone has been frozen, everyone is thawed out and a new player is randomly selected to be it. At any time, a player can choose to give up being “it” by running out of the area at which point someone else will be randomly chosen.
Where do you go play tag? North of Bree, in the Northern Bree-Fields near the Festival Grounds are the ruins of two keeps. One is for regular tag, the other for freeze tag. Once inside, you’ll see an NPC standing next to a “Tag Beacon”. When the Tag Beacon is lit, the game begins.

My kinship and I hung out for over an hour late Sunday night playing freeze tag and having a great time. Most of us were using vent (ventrilo, or “voice chat”) laughing, cheering, and just enjoying ourselves. It was great. So if your kinship loves to have fun and do something different, I definitely recommend trying it out at least once.
These games are not limited to members of your kinship nor requires a fellowship. It’s open to anyone who enters the area. Once inside, everyone is fair game! In fact, here’s a screenshot of Barumg, Officer of Light of the Valar, who joined us in playing freeze tag. I also need to give him props for being one of the few who successfully tagged everyone!

By the way, in case you’re wondering about burglars and they’re ability to stealth…

Freeze Tag is FUN! It’s a great change of pace from questing/crafting, AND it’s a great kinship activity that any level character can participate in. Many props to the devs for putting mini-games in the game… here’s hoping they’ll add more in the future!
Aw, now I really wish I hadn’t gone to bed when you guys were starting this! Ah well, this will probably be a regular guild event, so next time.
This really was a fun time. I totally lost track of what time it was until the old people had to go to bed.
Speaking of mini-games, I wonder if there are other mini-games out there yet to be discovered.
More fun than I’ve had in a LONG time. I spent the majority of playtime in hysterics while I made myself dizzy spinning around a jumping about.
Bonus: being a hobbit makes it easier to hide in the bushes!
Sounds like great fun… sorry I had to miss it! (Prendo would have had a blast)
On a side note… MegaBuddy needs a proofreader, too
